F04, meat probe: the probe input reads shorted; a non-critical fault, re-enter the timed or delay function.

Check, in this order

Let the oven cool, then pull the probe plug straight out of its socket.
pass unplugged: go on to step 2 fail no probe was plugged in: go to the stop list

Run your fingers along the cable and plug, feeling for melted, cracked or crushed spots.
pass cable feels sound: go on to step 3 fail damage anywhere: retire that probe and cook without it

Wipe grease from around the socket with a dry cloth; spray nothing into it.
pass clean and dry: go on to step 4 fail scorched or loose-looking: leave it alone

Re-enter the timed or delay cook you had set, first with the socket empty.
pass no F04 now: the probe was shorting fail F04 with the socket empty: stop here

Probe or socket
Taking the probe out of the circuit is the quickest test there is. If the code clears, the short was in the probe or its cable; if it stays with the socket empty, the socket and the wiring behind it are next, and that is technician work.
Stop and call if
- F04 shows while nothing is plugged into the probe socket.
- The socket surround looks scorched, melted or discolored.
- A probe with a sound cable still brings the code back.

Can I keep using the oven with F04 on the display?
Yes, within limits. The EOC4 table ranks F04 as non-critical, so the control cancels only the probe feature and lets the oven keep heating. Cook by time and check doneness with a hand thermometer until Viking Repair Redmond, (425) 585-2373, has looked at it.
Do all Viking wall ovens have a meat probe?
No. In the EOC4 service manual only the DDOE305 lists a probe reading in its diagnostics, and the VGSO166 gas wall oven's code list stops at F3. If your oven has no probe socket, an F4 or F04 needs a technician's look.
