Is self-clean safe to run on an older Viking?
The cycle is built to run locked, with limit switches guarding it; on an older oven the real risk is a worn lock, fan or switch quitting mid-clean. Viking Repair Redmond, (425) 585-2373.

Check, in this order

Think back to the last clean: did the door unlock by itself once the oven cooled?
pass yes: the lock and its switch were working then fail no, or it needed coaxing: skip self-clean until the lock is seen

With the oven cold, look for a code on the display or a lock light still lit.

Close the door and sight along its top edge for a gap at either corner.

What a clean asks of the parts
On Viking’s VGSC306 self-clean gas range the clean timer runs about three and a half hours. A motor drives the door lock, a switch stops it releasing the door above roughly 575°F, and a cooling fan runs throughout to keep that motor cool.
A high-limit switch on the lock bracket opens if that spot overheats, and stays open until the range is powered down.
Each of those parts works hardest during a clean; a lock that already hesitates, or a fan gone noisy, is the likeliest to quit at full heat.
If a clean stops early, turn the oven off at its controls and leave the door until it cools; the door locked shut answer takes it from there.
Stop and call if
- A code appears mid-clean, or the oven goes dead partway through.
- The cooling fan you normally hear through a clean falls silent.
